In my random hyperfixation studies I come across the term “evolutionary trait” quite a lot. From Psychology to Neurology to basic biology, the all discuss things that once had a purpose. That allowed us to evolve to the point we are at.
However, quite a number of these traits are now useless in a modern society, bit like tit’s on a man, yet we still judge people by these outdated ideals.
The thing is, no species ever stops evolving, we constantly adapt to new ideas, environments, even situations. And yet we dismiss new traits that appear as “abnormalities” rather than “adaptations” . We stunt ourselves by looking back rather than forward.
For example, in the working world those who can multitask, create new ideas, and deal rapidly with urgent issues are praised and desirable employees. Yet people with ADHD, who’s brains work in that exact way are often marginalised as “abnormal” or “disabled”
We live in a technological age, and our lives have moved on from what they were a hundred years ago. And yet our ideas of what people should be has not. What evolutionary traits are starting to show up now to allow us to survive this modern age? And when will we see them as positives instead of abnormalities?
